Ahrefs vs Semrush
The single most-searched SEO tool comparison on the web, and a pairing Ahrefs names in its own wrongFor text: anyone who only needs on-page guidance is pointed away from it, straight at what Semrush covers.
The difference that matters
Ahrefs' own verdict is blunt: you are paying for the index, not the interface, and on link data nothing else is as trustworthy. It is a specialist, built around the most trusted backlink index in the industry. Semrush's own verdict calls itself the full instrument panel: keyword research, competitor tracking, site audits and AI content briefs in one suite, expensive, and the only one of the two that answers competitive questions properly.
Side by side
| Ahrefs | Semrush | |
|---|---|---|
| Free tier | Ahrefs Webmaster Tools: limited to data about your own verified site, not general SEO research; no full free version of the paid toolset | No true perpetual free tier for real use, only a limited free account with capped daily searches (exact caps not published) plus a separate 7-day free trial of paid plans requiring a credit card, auto-billing after |
| Entry paid plan | Lite plan, $129/mo: 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords, 5 tracked AI prompts, 100,000 crawl credits/month, 1 user seat (extra seats $40/mo each), 6 months historical data | Pro plan, $139.95/mo (or $117.33/mo billed annually), 5 projects, 500 keywords tracked daily, 10,000 results per report, 100,000 pages audited per month |
| Bills in | Metered 'credits' (crawl credits for Site Audit, report/usage credits for lookups), layered with hard caps on projects, tracked keywords and user seats per plan | Billed per account/subscription tier, not per seat by default; additional team members cost extra as a per-user add-on starting at $45/month |
Choose Ahrefs if
Backlink and link-building data is the actual job, and you want the index everyone else's tools quietly point back to.
Choose Semrush if
You need one suite that also does competitor tracking, technical site audits and content workflow, not just link data, and can justify the higher price.
Our verdict
Ahrefs if backlink data is the whole job. Semrush if you need the broader instrument panel and competitive research alongside it.
What to watch out for
Both entry prices come from direct vendor-page fetches, but neither vendor structures pricing simply: Ahrefs also lists a cheaper Starter tier around $29/mo whose usage caps could not be confirmed, so its documented $129/mo Lite plan is used as entryPaid instead; Semrush now runs two overlapping plan families (legacy 'SEO Classic', cheapest at $139.95/mo, and a newer 'Semrush One' bundle starting at $199/mo), and the legacy Pro plan is used here as the true lowest entry point.

Both of these sit in the full Marketing & SEO directory, which covers 6 tools.
