Surfer SEO vs Semrush
Someone deciding whether to buy the tool built to make one article rank, or the tool built to answer competitive questions about an entire site. It usually comes down to a solo writer or small team wondering if they really need the full SEO suite just to get a single piece of content to rank.
The difference that matters
Surfer scores one document at a time against what is currently ranking, a live content score, an outline built from the current top 10, and internal linking suggestions pulled from your own site. Semrush is a full competitive-research suite, keyword research, daily rank tracking against rivals, technical site audits, and AI content briefs, with on-page scoring as one feature among many rather than the whole product. Surfer's entry plan (Discovery) is $49/mo billed annually for 120 documents and 10 tracked pages, Semrush's cheapest plan runs about $139 to $140/mo billed monthly for 5 projects and 500 keywords tracked daily.
Side by side
| Surfer SEO | Semrush | |
|---|---|---|
| Free tier | None (no free tier or free trial) | No true perpetual free tier for real use, only a limited free account with capped daily searches (exact caps not published) plus a separate 7-day free trial of paid plans requiring a credit card, auto-billing after |
| Entry paid plan | $49/mo billed annually or $59/mo billed monthly (Discovery: 120 documents, 10 tracked pages, AI SEO guidelines, Surfy AI assistant) | Pro plan, $139.95/mo (or $117.33/mo billed annually), 5 projects, 500 keywords tracked daily, 10,000 results per report, 100,000 pages audited per month |
| Bills in | Monthly document credits (create/optimize) plus tracked pages | Billed per account/subscription tier, not per seat by default; additional team members cost extra as a per-user add-on starting at $45/month |
Choose Surfer SEO if
Pick Surfer when the job is making a specific article, or a modest monthly content calendar, actually rank, and you want a live score to write against rather than a dashboard to interpret.
Choose Semrush if
Pick Semrush when you need to track rankings against competitors, audit technical SEO across a whole site, or figure out why a rival outranks you, questions Surfer was never built to answer.
Our verdict
These are not really competing for the same purchase, buy Surfer to score and improve individual articles, buy Semrush to run competitive SEO across a whole site, and do not buy Semrush's full suite just to get Surfer's narrower job done cheaper.
What to watch out for
Semrush's plan names appear to have shifted: the live pricing page now lists an 'SEO' plan at $139/mo instead of a 'Pro' plan at $139.95/mo, but the limits match, so this reads as a rename. Semrush also now sells a separate 'Semrush One' bundle (from $199 to $549/mo) alongside this cheaper legacy tier. Surfer's $49/mo Discovery (annual) and $59/mo monthly figures matched the live pricing page exactly, with no free tier or free trial on either option.
