How to actually choose

Three questions cut through almost all of the noise:

1. Is this a one-off or a workflow? For one-off tasks, a general assistant (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) is usually enough - don’t buy a specialized tool to write one email. Specialized tools earn their subscription when the task is recurring: weekly videos, daily meeting notes, a monthly content calendar.

2. Does the output need to be finished? Generalist AI gets you 80% of the way. Tools like Canva, Gamma, or Descript exist because the last 20% - layout, brand, timing - is where generic output falls apart.

3. How bad is a wrong answer? For research where accuracy matters, use tools that cite sources (Perplexity, Consensus, NotebookLM) rather than a chatbot’s memory.
