Perplexity vs Gemini Notebook
Two AI research tools whose own wrongFor text describe exact functional opposites: one refuses to leave the open web, the other refuses to leave your own documents.
The difference that matters
Perplexity's own wrongFor names its gap outright: reasoning over your own private documents. It is built to go out and search the live web, with every claim footnoted back to a source it found. NotebookLM's own wrongFor is the mirror image: open-web questions, it will not go and look. It answers strictly from the sources you upload, which is exactly why its answers hold up when checked.
Side by side
| Perplexity | Gemini Notebook | |
|---|---|---|
| Free tier | Limited daily searches (roughly 3 Pro Searches/day plus a small number of Deep Research queries), basic model access, capped file uploads (~40MB per file, 30-day retention) | No account purchase needed. 100 notebooks, up to 50 sources/notebook (each up to ~500,000 words), 50 chat queries/day, 3 Audio Overviews/day, 3 Video Overviews/day, 10 reports/day, 10 Deep Research sessions/month |
| Entry paid plan | Perplexity Pro, $20/month (~$16.67/mo billed annually), unlimited Pro Search, an expanded Deep Research quota, access to premium underlying models, larger file uploads and priority access | Google AI Plus, $4.99/month (US), bundles NotebookLM Plus (roughly double the free caps: ~100 sources/notebook, 200 notebooks, 200 daily chat queries, 6 Audio/Video Overviews/day) plus 400GB storage and wider Gemini app access |
| Bills in | Flat recurring subscription, monthly or discounted annual, not metered per-query for individual plans | Monthly per-user subscription, not usage-metered; usage is capped by per-notebook and daily/monthly limits that scale up with the Google AI subscription tier (Plus, Pro, Ultra) |
Choose Perplexity if
The question needs a current, footnoted answer pulled from the open web, not from documents you already have.
Choose Gemini Notebook if
You have your own sources, a set of PDFs, docs or a contract, and want answers grounded strictly in them, with nothing invented from outside.
Our verdict
Perplexity for open-web research with citations. NotebookLM for closed-corpus research over documents you already hold, including its Audio Overviews for turning them into a spoken briefing.
What to watch out for
Neither vendor's pricing page could be fetched directly during verification, so both rest on cross-corroborated third-party trackers. NotebookLM (renamed Gemini Notebook in July 2026) has no standalone paid tier at all: its Plus/Pro/Ultra caps are unlocked entirely through the wider Google AI Plus/Pro/Ultra subscription, which also bundles unrelated storage and Gemini app perks, so its 'entry paid plan' figure is really a shared household subscription price, not a dedicated NotebookLM SKU the way Perplexity Pro is.
