Claude Code vs Cursor

The two most-discussed AI coding tools for working developers, priced identically but shaped completely differently.

The difference that matters

Cursor is an editor: a VS Code fork with AI woven into every keystroke, and it has a free tier to try that before paying. Claude Code is a terminal-and-IDE-agnostic agent: it has no free tier at all and lives inside whatever editor or shell you already use, sharing usage against your Claude Pro plan.

Choose Claude Code if

You want one agent that follows you across the terminal, your existing editor, the web, and your phone, and you are fine paying from day one to get it.

Choose Cursor if

You want a familiar editor experience with AI built into autocomplete and chat, and you want to try it for free before committing $20/month.

Our verdict

Cursor if you want to try before you buy and prefer AI inside a dedicated editor. Claude Code if you already have an editor you like and want an agent that works anywhere, not just there.

What to watch out for

Both list $20/mo as the entry paid tier, but they are not the same $20. Claude Code's usage shares a pool with your Claude.ai chat activity, so heavy chat use can eat into coding capacity. Cursor's Pro tier has its own Agent-request caps that scale up on the pricier Pro+ and Ultra tiers.
