ChatGPT vs Claude
The two most-used AI chat assistants, and the highest-traffic decision on the whole site: which one to open by default.
The difference that matters
ChatGPT's own wrongFor names the gap outright: long documents that must be held accurately in a single pass. Claude's verdict answers it directly, holding a long document in its head without drifting and pushing back when you are wrong. ChatGPT counters with the broadest feature surface, the best mobile app, and image generation in the same window, something Claude has no equivalent of.
Side by side
| ChatGPT | Claude | |
|---|---|---|
| Free tier | Unlimited everyday text chats (abuse safeguards apply); GPT-5 access capped around 10 messages per 5 hours, then falls back to a mini model | Chat on web, iOS, Android, and desktop, plus code generation, content creation, web search, memory, file creation, and connector integration, with a limited session-based message allowance |
| Entry paid plan | ChatGPT Plus, $20/month: everything in Free plus full GPT-5 access, expanded messaging/uploads, faster image generation, and advanced research/memory/task tools | Claude Pro, $20/mo billed monthly, or $17/mo billed annually ($200/yr) |
| Bills in | monthly subscription with usage limits (higher-tier plans priced per user per month) | Flat recurring subscription (monthly or annual), not usage-based; optional extra usage credits can be purchased beyond included caps |
Choose ChatGPT if
You want the safe default with the broadest feature set, native image generation alongside chat, and the app your colleagues already have open.
Choose Claude if
The task is a long document, contract, or codebase that has to be held accurately end to end, or the writing needs a natural voice that pushes back rather than just agrees.
Our verdict
ChatGPT for breadth and the everyday default. Claude for anything long-form where accuracy over the whole document matters more than feature count.
What to watch out for
Both price their entry paid plan at $20/mo, but bill differently: ChatGPT's Plus tier caps GPT-5 access around 10 messages per 5 hours before falling back to a mini model, while Claude Pro is a flatter subscription with a session-based allowance and no separate model downgrade. Neither vendor's pricing page could be fetched directly during verification; figures rest on official help-center articles and cross-corroborated trackers.
